Colbert Challenges Trump: Donate $1M to Charity

Stephen Colbert has offered a challenge to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, donate $1 million to charity.

After Trump recently discussed a small $1 million loan given to him by his father, Colbert suggested that he donate it to charity if it is in fact such a small sum of money.

“[Trump] is a man who is proud to say a million dollars is a ‘small’ amount of money,” Colbert said Wednesday night on “The Late Show,” referencing Trump’s remarks to that effect earlier this week.

“This is the same guy who thinks three is a small number of wives,” Colbert quipped. “Through hard work, perseverance and an accountant well-versed in bankruptcy loopholes, he became the great, magnanimous billionaire we all know today.

“These days, he is worth billions of dollars — for him, a million dollars is garbage,” the late-night talk show host added.

“Which is why I’m happy to announce that I’ve taken the liberty of writing a one-million dollar check from Donald Trump to the charity of my choice — the Harlem Children’s Zone.”

The Hill reports:

Colbert then presented a gigantic prop check bearing Trump’s signature and the memo line “no big deal.”

He argued that Trump would find his choice of philanthropic organization appealing given it is located in New York City.

“Now, Mr. Trump, all you have to do is come here and sign it, proving that a million dollars really is a small amount of money, especially when it is helping other people get a start in Manhattan,” Colbert said.

“Who knows?” he asked. “The kids you help might one day be so rich that they can blow their cash on a presidential campaign.”

The Harlem Children Zone’s website says its goal is giving “our kids the individualized support they need to get to and through college and become productive, self-sustaining adults.”

Colbert’s challenge follows Trump’s remarks Monday stating that his business success comes from a “small” loan of $1 million granted by his father.
