Cruz Calls Gun Control an ‘Abysmal Failure’ at Iowa Shooting Range
Sen. Ted Cruz blasted gun control on Friday, calling it an “abysmal failure” while at a shooting range.
“It’s these constitutional rights that keep us safe,” Cruz said. “You don’t stop bad guys by taking away our guns. You stop bad guys by using our guns.”
“When I’m elected president,” Cruz began to say to laughter and clapping, labeling it as a “Freudian slip,” “we will change the policy so that we will allow every service man and woman to keep and bear arms to protect themselves.”
The Hill reports:
The rollout of the coalition comes two days after the mass shooting in San Bernardino, Calif., that left 14 dead and more than 20 wounded, and on the same day the FBI confirmed it is investigating the shooting as an “act of terrorism.”
Cruz campaign spokesman Rick Tyler said earlier on Friday that the visit to the gun range was scheduled before the shooting.
When discussing the California attack, Cruz knocked the state’s gun laws, which are some of the strictest in the country, and generally criticized gun control measures as an “abysmal failure.”
“Within seconds it seems, the Democrats, within seconds the media … immediately began saying the answer is we need to go after and strip away the rights of the Second Amendment,” Cruz said. “That’s always their solution.”
Cruz also took a few jabs at political correctness and the controversy surrounding the use of the term “illegal immigrants,” joking that the correct term is “undocumented Democrats.”
Cruz has recently been climbing in the polls both nationally and in the first-in-the-nation caucus state. He sits in third place with 13.5 percent in national polls and also in third with 18.3 percent in Iowa GOP polls, according to RealClearPolitics averages.
