Mike Tyson Defends Trump
Leave Donald Trump alone. That’s what Mike Tyson called for on Monday, pointing to the constant barrage that Trump faces from the mainstream media for his disastrous comments about Muslims, immigration, and the death penalty.
“Anybody that was ever president of the United States offended some group of people or some groups of people were offended,” Tyson, a practicing Muslim who endorsed Trump earlier this year, told TMZ Sports in a video Monday.
“Ask his fans if he needs to apologize,” he added. “He’s still ahead in the polls and he deserves a chance. If they don’t like him, they shouldn’t vote for him. Let’s go to the polls and see who wins.”
“Keep it fair,” the retired heavyweight champ said. “Man for man, debate for debate.
“You can talk about Trump, Trump can talk about those people,” he added of the crowded GOP field. “We’ll see who wins.”
The Hill reports:
Tyson endorsed Trump in an interview on Oct. 26.
“Let’s run America like a business, where no colors matter,” Tyson said at the time.
Trump last week proposed a temporary freeze on admitting Muslims to the U.S. He has defended the plan as necessary to prevent Islamic terrorism at home.
The outspoken billionaire’s suggestion sparked a fierce backlash from Muslim professional athletes.
NBA Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, said Trump’s idea helps the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) inspire terrorism.
“Trump is ISIS’s greatest triumph,” the former basketball player wrote in an op-ed last week. “Electing him would be like asking the clown at the children’s birthday party to start juggling chainsaws.”
Muhammad Ali, another boxing great, also called on public figures to foster a better understanding of Islam worldwide.
“Speaking as someone who has never been accused of political correctness, I believe that our political leaders should use their position to bring understanding about the religion of Islam and clarify that these misguided murderers have perverted people’s views on what Islam really is.”
