Gowdy: ‘I’m Going to Vote for the Republican Nominee, Period’
Rep. Trey Gowdy made it clear on Monday that he would vote Republican no matter who the nominee is.
“I’m going to vote for the Republican nominee, period,” the chairman of the House Select Committee on Benghazi said on “The Mike Gallagher Show.”
“I’m going to vote for the Republican nominee because anyone on our side is better than anyone on their side.”
“I am so tired of having [Democrats] control the executive branch that I am going to vote for whoever is the Republican nominee.”
The Hill reports:
Gowdy’s remarks follow his endorsement last week of Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) for the White House. He said Republicans need to focus on the larger goal in 2016, even if they disagree over who their nominee should be.
“I hope that people with other candidates not named Marco Rubio will say, ‘you know what, let’s at least be unified in our desire to pick the next Supreme Court justice, to pick U.S. attorneys in all 50 states, to set our foreign policy,” Gowdy said.
“We have a great field. You may decide you like another one better than Marco. I’d never tell you or any of your listeners who they should vote for.”
Gowdy then defended Rubio against charges that he has changed his stance on immigration since working on the controversial Gang of Eight legislation in 2013.
“I am much more interested in where Sen. Rubio is right now,” he said. “I’m interested in why he’s changed.
“I have had a lot of conservations with Marco about the Gang of Eight and where he is now and I would tell you he’s as tough on immigration as any other candidate running.”
“If you accept the idea that there is no perfect candidate, I’ll settle for the candidate who is honest. Marco is honest.”
Trump leads the GOP field by nearly 16 points nationwide, according to the latest RealClearPolitics average of samplings. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) than edges Rubio by 8 percentage points per the index’s latest edition.
