Obama Mocks Trump Ahead of SOTU

President Barack Obama mocked Donald Trump ahead of his State of the Union speech, saying that Trump’s own version of his speech would be perfect material for a Saturday Night Live skit.

“Look, anything’s possible,” he said during the interview with NBC’s Matt Lauer on Today, which aired Tuesday morning. “And I think we shouldn’t be complacent. I think everybody’s got to work hard.”

The Hill reports:

The president offered a preview of his final speech, in which he’s expected to deliver a rebuttal of Trump’s doom-and-gloom vision of America.

He accused Trump of feeding off the politics of “simplistic solutions and scapegoating,” preying on people’s fears about the future and longstanding political divisions.

“The message that Donald Trump’s putting out has had adherence a lot of times during the course of our history,” Obama said.

“But I’m pretty confident that the overwhelming majority of Americans are looking for the kind of politics that does feed our hopes and not our fears, that does work together and doesn’t try to divide us,” he added.

Asked if he feels responsible for the rise of Trump, Obama said “you know, talk to me if he wins. Then we’ll have a conversation about how responsible I feel about it.”

But the president conceded that his campaign promise of narrowing the nation’s partisan divide hasn’t been fulfilled.

“It’s a regret,” he said, adding “I could not be prouder of what we’ve accomplished.”
