Cruz: I Can Convert Dems, Win Blue States
Sen. Ted Cruz is convinced he can do the impossible by winning over Dems and blue states.
Cruz, a far right-winger and a member of the Tea Party movement, has looked normal when compared to Donald Trump and his craziness.
“On a daily basis, we are seeing Democrats come over and support us and the reason is simple: what we are doing right now isn’t working,” the White House hopeful said in an interview published Thursday by U.S. News & World Report.
“For working men and women, the Obama-Clinton economy has been a disaster,” Cruz continued, citing President Obama and Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton. “Our foreign policy has been even worse.
“A huge part of our coalition are Reagan Democrats, are blue collar Catholics, working class men and women across the Midwest [and] up into New England.”
The Hill reports:
The GOP presidential contender then vowed he would blue win states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and New Hampshire.
“We haven’t been bringing out the Reagan Democrats [but] I believe my campaign will do that,” he said of his strategy. “Look, a crossover is a double-whammy. It’s pulling their people away and bringing them to you.
“What Regan did in getting millions of [former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt] Democrats to cross over, I think we have the same potential of doing with the working-class Democrats who are frankly being treated abysmally by the Democratic Party right now,” he added.
“Like Reagan, [we] draw a line in the sand that causes the Michigan auto-worker to cross over and say, ‘these are my values.’”
Cruz added that his secret weapon is sticking to his guns on conservative values rather than abandoning them in a general election.
“I’ll point out that what we do know isn’t working is following the Bob Dole-John McCain-Mitt Romney plan,” he said, citing previously unsuccessful Republican presidential nominees.
“The Washington conventional wisdom is that we need to keep moving further and further left and sounding more and more like the Democrats. That, we know, produces double-digit losses.”
Cruz’s remarks come as he trails GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump by 16 points nationwide, according to the latest RealClearPolitics average of polls. That gap is even wider in New Hampshire, where Cruz lags behind the outspoken billionaire by over 19 percent.
