NY Governor to Ban Gay Conversion Therapy

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is set to ban gay conversion therapy, calling the practice “hateful and fundamentally flawed.”

“Conversion therapy is a hateful and fundamentally flawed practice that is counter to everything this state stands for,” Cuomo said Saturday in a statement.

“New York has been at the forefront of acceptance and equality for the LGBT community for decades – and today we are contributing to that legacy and leading by example,” he added.

“We will not allow the misguided and the intolerant to punish LGBT young people for simply being who they are.”

The Hill reports:

Cuomo is expected to announce the executive order Saturday night when he receives the National Equality Award from the Human Rights Campaign, the largest national LGBT civil rights organization.

It will prohibit public and private health insurers from covering the practice and New York mental health facilities from attempting the therapy on minors.

The regulation also prevents Medicaid coverage for the controversial procedure, which the American Psychiatric Association can cause “depression, anxiety and self-destructive behavior.”

At least four states — Oregon, California, Illinois and New Jersey — have similar laws.
