NYC Mayor Nearly Endorsed Sanders over Clinton: Report

According to a new report, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio nearly backed Bernie Sanders for president, but was talked out of it by his top aides.

The Hill reports:

De Blasio, a Hillary Clinton ally who led her Senate campaign in 2000, eventually endorsed Clinton in October.

But before that, the mayor “actually did come genuinely close” to supporting Sanders, according to the report. Top aide Emma Wolfe was reportedly among the confidantes who talked him out of it.

De Blasio drew ire from Clinton’s campaign and supporters for taking so long to endorse. That criticism was the subject of the controversial “C.P. time” joke in a comedy skit Clinton and de Blasio performed last month.

“The candidate who I believe can fundamentally address income inequality effectively, who has the right vision and the right experience to get the job done, is Hillary Clinton,” de Blasio said in October as he endorsed Clinton.

She won the New York primary last month, garnering 58 percent of the vote and 139 pledged delegates.
