London Mayor: Trump’s Islam Views Make the World Less Safe
Sadiq Khan, London’s new Muslim mayor said on Tuesday that Donald Trump’s rhetoric is dangerous and makes the world less safe.
“This isn’t just about me,” Sadiq Khan said Tuesday, according to The Associated Press. “It’s about my friends, my family and everyone who comes from a background similar to mine, anywhere in the world.
“Donald Trump’s ignorant view of Islam could make both our countries less safe — it risks alienating mainstream Muslims and plays into the hands of extremists,” he added.
The Hill reports:
London elected Khan last Friday, making him the first Muslim mayor of a major Western capital.
Khan, a Labour Party member and former human rights lawyer, is the son of Pakistani immigrants.
He said Monday that Trump’s call for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the U.S. would bar him from visiting.
“I want to go to America to meet with and engage with American mayors,” Khan told Time Magazine.
“If Donald Trump becomes the president, I’ll be stopped from going there by virtue of my faith, which means I can’t engage with American mayors and swap ideas.”
Trump on Monday floated an exception for Khan, adding that he was “happy” to see the new mayor’s victory.
“There will always be exceptions,” he said. “I think if he does a great job, it will really — you lead by example. Always lead by example. If he does a good job and, frankly, if he does a great job, that would be a terrific thing.”
Khan said Tuesday that his election proves the global community does not agree with Trump on Islam.
“London has proved him wrong,” he said.
