The Hill reports:
Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders will campaign in Puerto Rico Monday as the territory continues to endure a debt crisis that has 230 people leaving for the mainland, on average, every day.
Sanders will hold a press conference Monday morning and have a public event at the University of Puerto Rico later in the day, campaign director Betsy Franceschini said in a statement to local media outlets. Sanders confirmed that he will travel to Puerto Rico Sunday while visiting a campaign office in Frankfort, Ky., on Saturday.
The Vermont senator’s visit comes as Puerto Rico begins defaulting on different classes of some of its $70 billion of debt.
The House of Representatives introduced legislation last month that would allow the federal government to restructure the island’s bonds. Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said the latest version of the bill would be introduced in the coming days as lawmakers continue negotiations, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Sanders has supported allowing Puerto Rico to declare bankruptcy.
Former President Bill Clinton will campaign for his wife, Hillary, the Democratic presidential front-runner, in Puerto Rico Monday as well, but there are no details yet on his events.
Clinton, too, supports allowing Puerto Rico to declare bankruptcy.
The visits come ahead of the island’s June 5 caucus, where 67 delegates are at stake.
