‘The Wire’ Actor Arrested for Allegedly Attacking Sanders Supporter
Wendell Pierce, known as Detective William “Bunk” Moreland on The Wire, was arrested on Monday after he allegedly attacked a Bernie Sanders supporter.
The Hill reports:
Witnesses at the Loews Hotel in Atlanta told TMZ that Pierce, a supporter of Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton, became angry with a woman on Saturday night who said she backed the Vermont senator.
According to TMZ, Pierce, who’s 52, pushed her boyfriend and then grabbed the woman’s hair and hit her. The couple then went back to their room and called security, who contacted police.
Pierce was arrested and charged with simple battery, The New York Times reported. He was released on $1,000 bail.
The Atlanta Police Department said in a statement that the arrest “was treated like any other arrest a patrol officer conducts,” according to WDSU-TV in New Orleans. Pierce was born in New Orleans.
“Mr. Wendell Pierce was arrested early Saturday morning at Atlanta Lowes [sic] Hotel, where he was a guest. The incident did not rise to anything significant so no special notification was made … it was treated like any other arrest a patrol officer conducts. Mr. Pierce made no indication he was famous nor did the officer inquire. Once the incident report is complete we will be delighted to share the details. But at this time there is nothing significant to share with the media,” the statement read.
