BuzzFeed Cancels $1.3M in GOP Ads over Trump
Even for BuzzFeed, Donald Trump is too radical. BuzzFeed allegedly walked away from a $1.3 million deal with the Republican National Committee due to the tone of Trump’s campaign.
“We certainly don’t like to turn away revenue that funds all the important work we do across the company,” Peretti wrote. “However, in some cases we must make business exceptions: we don’t run cigarette ads because they are hazardous to our health, and we won’t accept Trump ads for the exact same reason.”
The Hill reports:
Peretti wrote that Trump’s policies, including his proposal to temporarily ban Muslims from coming to the United States, would hurt employees of BuzzFeed, but he said the move would not affect the site’s coverage of the presidential race.
A representative from BuzzFeed told The Hill in an email there was “nothing else to add” to Peretti’s letter.
BuzzFeed is not the first left-leaning website to express an aversion to Trump.
The Huffington Post initially refused to cover the former reality TV star’s campaign as anything but an entertainment story. As Trump closed in on the Republican nomination, however, it decided instead to add the following disclaimer to all Trump-related stories: “Note to our readers: Donald Trump is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist, birther and bully who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.”
