Scott Brown: Warren Could Prove Native American Heritage with DNA Test
Former Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown said on Monday that Sen. Elizabeth Warren should take a DNA test to prove her Native American ancestry.
The Hill reports:
Brown, who lost his reelection race to Warren in 2012, made the recommendation during a Republican National Committee call about Warren’s appearance alongside Hillary Clinton on the presidential campaign trail Monday.
“First of all, as we all know, she’s not Native American. She’s not 1/32nd. She has no Native American background except for what her family told her,” Brown said, according to The Washington Examiner.
“The easy answer, as you all know, is that Harvard and [the University of Pennsylvania] can release the records. She can authorize the release of those records. She can take a DNA test. She can release the records herself.”
The issue first came up during the 2012 race, when Warren foes uncovered that she had referred to herself as a minority professor during her stint at Harvard University. She defended her identification by noting that she had always been told she was part Cherokee, but she did not offer proof.
Brown went on to tie Clinton to Warren’s assertion, accusing them both of trying to flout the rules.
“So indirectly, Secretary Clinton is considering making someone the vice president who has very serious character flaws when it comes to honesty and credibility in dealing with her heritage,” he said.
“And what did that do? That took away somebody who truly was a Native American and gave that opportunity to somebody who’s not, and that’s just not right. It’s a reverse form a racism, quite frankly.”
Donald Trump, the GOP’s presumptive nominee, has repeatedly assailed Warren over the claim that she’s part Native America. He’s chided her with the nickname “Pocahontas” and has accused her of lying about her heritage, most recently in a Monday campaign statement.
“She said she’s 5 percent Native American, she was unable to prove it. She used the fact that she was Native American to advance her career. Elizabeth Warren is a total fraud,” he told MSNBC Monday.
“She made up her heritage, which I think is racist. I think she’s a racist, actually, because what she did was very racist.”
