When it comes to Mexican immigrants — and that he would call immigrants from Mexico murderers and rapists — look, that’s just not true,” Johnson said on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday.
“The stuff he is saying is just incendiary,” said the former New Mexico governor.
“Incendiary, but you think he himself is racist?” asked host Brianna Keilar.
“Based on his statements, clearly,” Johnson said.
“If his statements are being made, is that not reflective of — if you look at the definition of racism — calling a U.S.-born Hispanic Mexican and his inability to judge others, I think I’m now semi-quoting [Speaker] Paul Ryan [R-Wis.] here.”
The Hill reports:
Johnson was referring to Trump’s attacks on U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel. Trump, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, said Curiel’s Mexican heritage prevented him from presiding fairly over lawsuits involving Trump University.
