Kaine Blasts Trump Comments: I Couldn’t Believe He Said It
Tim Kaine on Tuesday condemned Donald Trump’s apparent joke about gun owners preventing Hillary Clinton from nominating pro-gun control judges.
The Hill Reports:
“I saw it reported and when I read the quote I really frankly couldn’t believe he said it, and so I went to watch the video of it and found that he had said it exactly the way it was printed,” Kaine, Clinton’s running mate, told reporters in Texas, according to the Washington Examiner.”Nobody who is seeking a leadership position, especially the presidency, the leadership of the country, should do anything to countenance violence, and that’s what he was saying.”
During a rally in Wilmington, N.C., earlier Tuesday, Trump warned the crowd that Clinton would be able to “essentially abolish” gun rights if she were elected president, given that she would be able to nominate judges to the Supreme Court.
“By the way, if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do folks,” he said.
“Though the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don’t know.”
The Trump campaign later tried to clarify that the mogul was trying to inspire gun owners to exercise their political power.
“It’s called the power of unification — 2nd Amendment people have amazing spirit and are tremendously unified, which gives them great political power,” said campaign spokesman Jason Miller in a statement.
“And this year, they will be voting in record numbers, and it won’t be for Hillary Clinton, it will be for Donald Trump.”
Kaine said the remarks showed that Trump is unfit to be president.
“There is a beautiful phrase from the Gospel of Luke that says: From the fullness of the heart, the mouth speaks,” he said.
“And what comes out often really reveals something important about you who you are, and I think Donald Trump revealed again, in many other statements he [has] revealed the same thing, it reveals sort of a complete temperamental misfit with the character that’s required to do the job and in a nation where — we got to be pulling together and countenancing violence is not something any leader should do,” Kaine added.
