Trump Aide: Mexico Trip ‘a Decisive, Presidential Move’
Kellyanne Conway, one of Trump’s aides, stated that by visiting Mexico, Donald Trump has shown he is Presidential.
The Hill reports:
Donald Trump’s campaign manager says the billionaire’s last-minute trip to Mexico proves he is ready for the presidency.
“The fact is, Mr. Trump was very excited to accept the invitation from the president in Mexico,” Kellyanne Conway said of the Republican presidential nominee Wednesday on NBC’s “Today.”
“It’s a decisive, presidential move,” she said. “I think you’ll see a very presidential Donald Trump today meeting with the president of Mexico.
He wants to establish a conversation with a neighboring country, a leader. And also to discuss the common problems and challenges that our countries face.”
Conway said Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee, is not keeping up with Trump.
“I mean, I feel like she keeps following the leader,” she told hosts Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie. “We’re the leader here.
“People are in need in Louisiana; we’re right there,” Conway said, citing recent heavy flooding there. “The president of Mexico invites us; we accept his invitation.
“We’re just happy the president of Mexico invited him. I’m sorry that [former] Secretary [of State] Hillary Clinton is not going and has not accepted the invitation.”
Conway said that Trump expects a “productive conversation” with Mexican leadership on issues including illegal immigration, trade policy and drugs.
Trump announced late Tuesday that he would meet privately with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto on Wednesday.
The visit is sandwiched between two events in the U.S., the first a fundraiser in California and the second a major immigration speech in Phoenix, Ariz.
Trump has repeatedly irked Mexican leaders by vowing their country will pay for a wall along its border with the U.S.
Trump has also blamed illegal immigration from Mexico for drug trafficking and violent crime.
