Dem Rep: Trump Trying to Con African-Americans

Democratic Rep. Gregory Meeks slammed Donald Trump on Sunday, saying that he is trying to con African-Americans into voting for him.

“It’s not real. … This is his first time visiting a black church. Here again you have what I think is a bait-and-switch scenario that Donald Trump is trying to put on and to, in the words of [Sen.] Marco Rubio [R-Fla.], con the American people … con African-Americans,” Meeks said on “Fox News Sunday.”

“His record speaks for himself.”

The Hill reports:

Trump spoke Saturday at a church in Detroit, where he promised to carry on Abraham Lincoln’s legacy if elected president.

“Becoming the nominee of the party of Abraham Lincoln … has been the greatest honor of my life,” Trump told churchgoers at Great Faith Ministries, marking his first appearance at an African-American church.

“It is on his legacy that I hope to build the future of the party, but, more importantly, the future of the country.”

The GOP nominee has been trying to reach out to black voters, regularly making a pitch to African-Americans during his stump speeches, asking what they have to lose by backing him.

Meeks, a black lawmaker, on Sunday said some of the things Trump has said are “clearly racist.”

“I can only go by what one says and what one has done,” Meeks said, citing several statements made by the Republican nominee, including his birther arguments, not immediately disavowing former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke and his recent pitch to African-Americans.

Meeks said those are statements that would lead one to believe Trump has “racist tendencies.”
