Soccer Star Megan Rapinoe Kneels During National Anthem in Nod to Kaepernick

U.S. women’s national team midfielder Megan Rapinoe stood with Colin Kaepernick on Sunday when she decided to kneel during the national anthem.

“It was a little nod to Kaepernick and everything that he’s standing for right now,” she said, referring to the San Francisco 49ers quarterback who has refused to stand during the “Star Spangled Banner” before games.

“I think it’s actually pretty disgusting the way he was treated and the way that a lot of the media has covered it and made it about something that it absolutely isn’t. We need to have a more thoughtful, two-sided conversation about racial issues in this country.”

The Hill reports:

Last week, Kaepernick said he would not “stand up and show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.”

His protest was met with swift backlash.

Republican nominee Donald Trumpsaid “maybe he should find a country that works better for him.”

A police union also threatened to stop staffing the 49ers football games if the team doesn’t take action against Kaepernick.

Prominent Black Lives Matter activist Shaun King praised Rapinoe, who is white, for kneeling.

“I actually think what [Rapinoe] did tonight was HUGE,” he tweeted. “A pivotal step. It shows this protest has not only crossed sports, but culture as well.”

Rapinoe, an Olympic gold medalist, responded that it’s the least she could do.

“Being a gay American, I know what it means to look at the flag and not have it protect all of your liberties,” she told American Soccer Now.

“It was something small that I could do and something that I plan to keep doing in the future and hopefully spark some meaningful conversation around it. It’s important to have white people stand in support of people of color on this. We don’t need to be the leading voice, of course, but standing in support of them is something that’s really powerful.”
