Trump Blasts Clinton for ‘Deplorables’ Comment

Donald Trump blasted Hillary Clinton on Saturday after she called half of his supporters “deplorable.”

The Hill reports:

Buzzfeed News first reported that Clinton made the comment on Friday while speaking at a fundraiser in New York City.

“You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right?” Clinton said. “The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic — you name it. And unfortunately, there are people like that. And he has lifted them up. He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people — now have 11 million.”

Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway took aim at Clinton almost immediately after the comments were reported, calling her “desperate.”

“Hillary, placing people in ‘baskets’, slandering them but admitting after 8 yrs, they are ‘desperate for change,’” she added.

The campaign issued a statement saying that the comments reflect how Clinton views the “hard-working men and women of America.”

“Just when Hillary Clinton said she was going to start running a positive campaign, she ripped off her mask and revealed her true contempt for everyday Americans,” said Trump spokesman Jason Miller.

“Tonight’s comments were more than another example of Clinton lying to the country about her emails, jeopardizing our national security, or even calling citizens ‘super-predators’ — this was Clinton, as a defender of Washington’s rigged system — telling the American public that she could care less about them.”

Clinton offered a half apology in a Saturday statement, saying she regrets lumping so many Trump supporters into one category, but stood by her characterization of aspects of the Trump campaign as “deplorable.”
