Gingrich: ‘You’re Not Supposed to Gain 60 Pounds’ When You’re Miss Universe
Politician Newt Gingrich has sided with Donald Trump over Trump’s controversial remarks regarding Alicia Machado, a former Miss Universe contestant and winner.
The Hill reports:
Former Speaker Newt Gingrich on Wednesday defended Donald Trump’s remarks about a former Miss Universe’s weight gain, blaming the woman for gaining the weight.
“You’re not supposed to gain 60 pounds during the year that you’re Miss Universe,” Gingrich told a Log Cabin Republicans event in Washington, according to the Daily Mail.
Gingrich also said Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the media were working together to lay “the Machado trap,” which he said was “a trap that was set up for three or four months.”
“News media were lined up to run articles the second Hillary said something,” he said, according to the Daily Mail.
Trump was put on the defensive during Monday night’s presidential debate after Clinton brought up the GOP nominee’s past comments about former Miss Universe Alicia Machado.
“One of the worst things he said was about a woman in a beauty contest … and he called this woman ‘Miss Piggy,’ then he called her ‘Miss Housekeeping’ because she was Latina. Donald, she has a name,” Clinton, the Democratic nominee, said.
“Her name is Alicia Machado, and she has become a U.S. citizen, and you can bet she’s going to vote this November.”
Trump said Tuesday the pageant winner “gained a massive amount of weight, and it was a real problem.”
Later Tuesday, Trump said he hardly knew Machado but claimed he saved her job after the company wanted to fire her for her weight gain.
“I had nothing to do with this person, but they wanted to fire her. I saved her job. … You know what happened, look what I get out of it. I get nothing,” Trump said during an interview Tuesday on Fox News.
“And it is a beauty contest,” Trump later added. “Say what you want, but, I mean, they know what they’re getting into. It’s a beauty contest. And I said don’t do that. Let her try and lose the weight. Can you imagine I end up in a position like this.”
