Trump Suggests Women ‘Go to Another State’ for Abortions
Donald Trump believes that states rights should prevail in issues of abortion.
The Hill reports:
Under a Donald Trump presidency, women may have to go to a different state than the one they live in to get an abortion, the president-elect said in an interview Sunday night.
In an interview with CBS’ “60 Minutes,” Trump said he would appoint conservative justices to the Supreme Court, who may overturn Roe. v. Wade, the landmark decision that legalized abortion.
“The judges will be pro-life,” Trump said.
“But having to do with abortion – if it were ever overturned – it would go back to the states.”
“Yeah, but then some women won’t be able to get an abortion,” replied “60 Minutes” Lesley Stahl.
Trump responded: “Yeah, well, they’ll perhaps have to go – they’ll have to go to another state.”
“And that’s OK?” Stahl asked.
“Well, we’ll see what happens. It’s got a long way to go, just so you understand. That has a long, long way to go.”
Abortion-rights advocates have long argued that states restricting access to abortion could have a disproportionate impact on low-income women, who may not be able to afford to travel for the procedure.
