Conway: Trump Has ‘Mandate’ to Lead Because He Won Electoral College
The Hill reports:
Donald Trump has a mandate from the people to push through his campaign promises even as Hillary Clinton’s lead in the popular vote continues to grow, an adviser to the president-elect said Sunday.
“The idea that Donald Trump doesn’t have a mandate after he got 100 more electoral votes than Mitt Romney did — he got 360 electoral votes. It wasn’t even close,” Conway said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
“He won states that had not gone Republican in decades.”
But Joel Benenson, who worked as a strategist for the Clinton campaign, pushed back on Conway’s idea of what qualifies as a mandate.
“Hillary Clinton had 2.5 million more Americans vote for her than Donald Trump,” he said in response on “Meet the Press.”
“A mandate is when you win big in the popular vote, when you win big in the Electoral College vote,” he said.
