Poll: Over Half Approve of Obama as He Leaves Office

A new poll has revealed that 55 percent of Americans approve of President Barack Obama as he gets ready to leave office.

The Hill reports:

Fifty-five percent approve of Obama’s job performance across two terms, according to the McClatchy-Marist poll released Tuesday, while 42 percent disapprove of his performance and 3 percent are unsure.

It’s Obama’s highest approval rating in the poll since August 2009, when he also received 55 percent. Obama scored a 51 percent approval rating last month, with 44 percent disapproving and 4 percent uncertain.

“For all the partisanship and bitter battles during the last eight years, President Obama is receiving strong send-off numbers,” said Dr. Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion.

Obama’s numbers are only slightly below the peak 56 percent approval he received in April and June of 2009.

Still, pollsters found voters have more mixed opinions on how history will judge Obama’s performance, with 16 percent saying he would rank among “one of the best presidents” and 24 percent saying he will place “above average.”

Another 28 percent ranked him as “average,” while 14 percent said “below average” and 17 percent said “one of the worst.”

The survey of 873 registered voters was conducted Dec. 1–9 via cellphones and landlines and has a margin of error of 3.3 percentage points.
