California Lawmakers Join Effort to Force Trump to Release Taxes
Donald Trump may be required to release his tax returns if he wants to run again in 2020.
The Hill reports:
California lawmakers are joining an effort started by New York state Democrats to force President-elect Donald Trump to release his tax returns before the 2020 election.
California state senators plan to introduce the TRUMP Act, or Tax Returns Uniformly Made Public Act, BuzzFeed reported on Monday.
It would forbid state electors from voting for Trump in 2020 if he had not already released five years of tax returns.
“It’s an unprecedented situation that someone who is going to be president has a massive web of business interests throughout the country and throughout the world, including with countries that are not our friends, and he refuses to disclose what his business interests are,” said Scott Weiner, one of the California state senators introducing the bill.
California’s state legislature is largely controlled my Democrats.
A New York state senator introduced the TRUMP bill earlier this month.
“If we’ve learned anything from this last election cycle, it’s that the political norms we take for granted in America can be shattered in an instant if they aren’t enshrined in law,” talking points for that measure obtained by BuzzFeed said.
