Gingrich on Chicago Torture Video: ‘We Are Right on the Edge of a Terrible Period’
Newt Gingrich believes that the recent kidnapping and torture of a white man in Chicago is a sign of possible coming racial division in America.
The Hill reports:
Former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) on Thursday warned that the U.S. was “at the edge of a terrible period” after a Facebook Live video surfaced in which a disabled white Chicago teen is seen being tortured amid chants of “f— Donald Trump.”
“If this had been done to an African-American by four whites, every liberal in the country would be outraged and there would be no question that it is a hate crime,” Gingrich said in an interview on “Fox & Friends.”
“We are right at the edge of a terrible period — which I know President-elect Donald Trump wants to avoid — of having a deep bitter division in the communities in a way that makes America very hard to govern.”
Chicago police arrested four suspects in connection to the video, which showed a group of people gagging and attacking a disabled suburban Chicago teen, according to The Guardian.
In the video, chants of “f— Donald Trump” and “f— white people” could be heard.
Police superintendent Eddie Johnson said Wednesday the suspects would face “the full weight of the Chicago police department.”
“Video of a brutal act towards an adult male with mental health challenges made its way onto social media,” Johnson said, according to the Guardian.
“The images in the video put on display the brazenness of the offenders who assaulted the victim and then broadcast it for the entire world to see.”
Police Commander Kevin Duffin said investigators are looking into whether the attack was a hate crime and “whether or not this is sincere or just stupid ranting and raving.”
