Stephen King: Trump’s Reaction to Meryl Streep ‘Childish’

Author Stephen King criticized President-elect Donald Trump for being childish in his response to actress Meryl Streep.

The Hill reports:

Streep delivered a passionate speech deriding the president-elect while accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 74th annual Golden Globes Sunday. The actress never named Trump, but criticized his imitation last year of a disabled former New York Times reporter.

“But there was one performance this year that stunned me,” Streep said. “It sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good — there was nothing good about it — but it was effective and it did its job.”

“It made its intended audience laugh and show their teeth,” added Streep, who endorsed Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton over Trump. “It kind of broke my heart when I saw it, and I still can’t get it out of my head because it wasn’t a movie; it was in real life.”

“Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence invites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.”

Trump on Monday retaliated by dismissing Streep’s credibility, adding he had never directly insulted reporter Serge Kovaleski’s congenital joint condition.

“Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn’t know me but attacked me last night at the Golden Globes,” he tweeted. “She is a Hillary flunky who lost big.”

“For the 100th time, I never ‘mocked’ a disabled reporter (would never do that) but simply showed him ‘groveling’ when he totally changed a 16-year-old story in order to make me look bad. Just more very dishonest media!”

Trump has repeatedly denied he was targeting Kovaleski’s disability during a 2015 speech, adding he has never met the journalist.

The billionaire inspired outrage by making jerky body motions while criticizing Kovaleski, leading some to conclude he was targeting the reporter’s physical challenges.
