Gingrich: Trump Should Tell New Spy Chief to ‘Thoroughly Overhaul’ Intelligence Community
Newt Gingrich believes that the American intelligence community should be torn down and created anew, as evidenced by their sloppy handling of the fake Trump dossier.
The Hill reports:
Former Speaker Newt Gingrich, a Donald Trump adviser, on Sunday blasted the intelligence community and pushed for a complete overhaul.
“I don’t think there should be a good relationship right now,” Gingrich said on CBS’s “Face The Nation,” when asked about Trump’s relationship with the intelligence community.
“The very top people who are political appointees, I think absolutely betrayed and undermined the intelligence community. I think they acted in ways that were totally inappropriate,” Gingrich said.
The former Speaker cited an unverified dossier that surfaced last week alleging Russia had compromising information on the president-elect.
Gingrich criticized the intelligence community for not attempting to verify the document’s claims.
He pointed to an allegation in the document that Michael Cohen, counsel to the president-elect, had taken part in meetings with Russian officials in Prague. Cohen disputed the report, saying he had never been to Prague.
“Nobody in the intelligence community picked up the phone and said, ‘Have you ever been to the Czech Republic?’ ” Gingrich said. “Think about the level of incompetence.”
Gingrich then said he hopes the president-elect gives Dan Coats, Trump’s choice to lead the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), a clear message when he assumes office.
“I hope what he does is say to the new Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, ‘I expect you to thoroughly overhaul the entire community,’ ” Gingrich said.
