‘SNL’ Scores Highest Ratings in 6 Years with Alec Baldwin as Host

Saturday Night Live is back on top in large part due to the amazing efforts of Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump.

The Hill reports:

The episode received a 7.2 overnight rating — the highest since 2011 for the program, CNN reported Sunday. The ratings mean 7.2 percent of households in 56 U.S. markets tuned into the program on Saturday night.

CNN noted that when Trump himself hosted the show as a presidential candidate in November 2015, the show got a 6.6 rating.

The show’s higher ratings come not only on the night of Baldwin’s historic hosting gig, but also as the program dives into the Trump era of political satire.

Actress Melissa McCarthy made another surprise appearance on the show Saturday as White House press secretary Sean Spicer, a week after her portrayal of the embattled spokesman went viral. Baldwin reprised his role as Trump to mock his battle with the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals over his executive order on immigration.

Trump, a critic of the show and a enthusiastic follower of television ratings, has not commented on Baldwin’s latest impressions of him. Trump has mocked new “Celebrity Apprentice” host Arnold Schwarzenegger for earning lower ratings than his own iteration of the show in the past.
