Pastor Arrested For Raping 14-Year-Old Family Member Inside His Own Church For 3 Years
An Alabama pastor has been arrested for raping an unidentified female family member for three years inside his own church, starting when the victim was just 14-years-old.
William Best Jr., 47, has been charged with rape, sodomy, and incest and is being held on $2 million bond in the county jail. District Attorney Michael Jackson says he thinks it’s the highest bond ever set in Dallas County, Alabama for these charges.
Jackson says “some things came out in the case we felt warranted a substantial increase.” Best’s initial bond was set at $250,000.
According to Sheriff Harris Huffman, the pastor began his sexual affair with the teenager three years ago and the two have had “dozens of sexual encounters” in both his church office and at Best’s home.
Police were alerted by the girl’s mother after the girl told her about Best following yet another “sexual tryst” on Saturday. Best was arrested on Tuesday and has been fired from Living Waters Worship Center where he has been a pastor for more than three years.
According to Rick Barrett, the chairman of the church’s board of directors, Best came “highly recommended” to the church after working as a pastor in Fayette, Alabama. According to a local news affiliate, Barrett said “this isn’t what the church is about, and they are a congregation of loving, caring people.”
Police have also seized the defendant’s computer, claiming they believe there are pornographic images of the victim on the hard drive. If that proves true, Best will face more charges related to taking and possessing pornographic images of a child.
