Man Fatally Shoots Wife in Church School Parking Lot in Front of Kids, Kills Self After Rape Charges
An Indiana man shot and killed his wife in a Catholic School parking lot and then shot himself mere months after being charged with raping her.
According to authorities, Remanard Castro shot his wife in the parking lot of St. Mary Catholic School in front of their 14-year-old son and 16-year-old daughter. He then tried to get away on a motorcycle but police cornered him at his house.
An officer found Castro in the garage with a gun and ordered him to lower his weapon. Instead, Castro shot himself.
According to the police department, “The Gary officer made contact with Mr. Castro. After disobeying the officer’s command, Mr. Castro turned the gun on himself and administered a fatal self-inflicted wound.”
Officials say Nina Castro and her children had moved out of the man’s home and were staying with her mother. The couple was set to finalize their divorce in June.
Earlier this year, Nina filed charges against Castro, accusing him of criminally confining and sexually assaulting her. According to the charges, she went to the house to get some of her property and Castro forced her to have sex with him at gunpoint.
In a press statement, the Griffith police chief called the incident “a sad reminder that no community is immune to domestic violence.”
Daniel MacFarlane, a witness to the incident, said “The kids in an after-school class were on lockdown. My neighbor was kind of freaking out, so she went to pick up her kid. It’s definitely scary, especially since it happened around the time kids were out playing before the weather turned.”
