Jon Stewart: Let’s Just Admit That US Has Been F***ing Veterans Over For Centuries
Jon Stewart discussed the Veterans Affairs healthcare scandal that has led to at least 40 veteran deaths from long waiting times on Thursday and took a look back at how veterans have been treated by previous administrations.
Stewart said “let’s pretend that this current VA crisis is an anomaly created by one unusually callous and ineffective president – but that would be just pretend. Or, on this Memorial Day weekend eve, we can finally admit that America has had, for over 200 years, a great bipartisan tradition of honoring those who have fought for our freedom by f***ing them over once they give their guns back.”
Stewart noted that while Republicans slam the President for the VA scandal, they dismiss their role in the budget cuts that caused the department’s problems. In February, the Republicans even tied increasing the VA budget as a condition for passing new sanctions against Iran.
Stewart said “these Republican senators have always stood up for our veterans – when they think it can help them slam the president. It’s slightly different when they think no one is watching.”
Stewart played a clip of Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly admitting that Republican George W. Bush did nothing to help the problem either.
Stewart said “this is why I like O’Reilly. He’s like Fox News’ Incredible Hulk: Sure, usually just a mindlessly aggressive force of destruction, but point it in the right direction, and he becomes a hero.”
Stewart played a clip of Karl Rove saying “by improving systems, it got down to an average of about 161 days by the time that Bush left office. By 2012, it was back up above the 230 that we inherited when we came into office to 260.”
Stewart replied “yeah, you get that? Eight years in office, and he’s bragging because he’s got the veterans’ average wait down to 5 to 6 months. While somewhat forgetting that a good reason it jumped back to 7 to 8 months was the Bush administration’s doing as well. So I guess Rove is saying, the Bush era VA warned the Obama team not to un-solve the VA problem the Bush administration had not solved either. That’s so disingenuous even Bill “Beyonce Hunter” O’Reilly calls bullshit.”
