‘Get Those Blacks Off The School Board’: TX Republican Defends Racist Statements
Two-term La Marque City Councilperson Connie Trube has come under fire for making racist statements on tape but is unapologetic and doesn’t intend to step down.
Earlier this month, a tape of Trube speaking to the husband of a fellow councilperson was released. On the recording, Trube is heard speaking about the financial and academic trouble the La Marque Independent School District is having.
“It’s not going to get any better until you get those blacks off the school board,” Trube is heard saying. “She really turned black. She got on the school board with the rest of the blacks and they all just ganged up and that’s why the school system has gone to hell.”
At the council meeting following the release of the tape, Trube offered no apologies, saying “what is on the tape is nothing more than me stating my honest opinion and I won’t back down from that. I never denied what was on that tape.”
Following the incident, La Marque Mayor Bobby Hocking said “racism will not be tolerated on any level in the city of La Marque.”
The city council censured Trube and has called for an independent investigation into the matter.
Many are upset that tax dollars are now going to investigate this and many others feel Trube should just resign.
Resident Geraldine Sam said “if you’re heard on tape making disparaging remarks, I’m just saying, it’s time that you resign.”
Resident Valerie Beverly said “it’s out obligation as citizens to speak out against racism and not allow that to take over our community.”
Council candidate Christopher Lane added “it really casts a negative shadow on the city. We can’t move forward with those dark clouds hovering over the city.”
