‘Women Are Put on This Earth to Satisfy a Man’: Woman Recording Catcallers on the Street Gets Outrageously Sexist Responses
A Minneapolis woman frustrated by being catcalled in the street secretly recorded her harassers and got some very sexist responses.
Lindsey, a 28-year-old Minnesota resident, said she aimed to show the “cumulative daily impact” of unwanted catcalls in the street.
“Where I come from, we holler at women,” said ‘Jared’ from Ohio. “I’m sorry if that offends you, but you shouldn’t feel that way because women are put on this earth to satisfy a man. If she feels offended, she should have never been born.”
Jared reportedly harassed Lindsey at a bus stop and when she asked him to stop he said he believed she was actually interested in him and he “wasn’t going to stop what he was doing.”
“White women get offended when black men approach them,” he accused her.
“Listen, I’ll yell at white men about this, I’ll yell at women about this,” Lindsey replied. “The point is, I should be able to walk down the street, just like you should be able to walk down the street.”
Other exchanges reportedly included a man yelling and calling her ugly after she confronted him about touching her hair, a man who called her a bitch only to explain it meant “sexy,” and two businessmen who loudly said “Minnesota women are hot.”
“I am genuinely interested in what place this is coming from,” she told Buzzfeed. “The theme I hear the most often is that they truly, genuinely think it’s a compliment, and they are shocked. If that is true, then simply telling people it’s not a compliment may go a long way. The filming provides them a platform to embarrass themselves in a way that they’ve already embarrassed me.”
