Hate Crime Suspect Stabbed Elderly Woman Because She Was Black: Police
Police have arrested an Illinois man and charged him with a hate crime after he reportedly stabbed an elderly African-American woman in a store.
On Saturday, 26-year-old Pol Danilov was charged with attempted first-degree murder as a hate crime and had his bail set at $500,000.
Police say Danilov admitted to police that he stabbed an unidentified 79-year-old woman with a knife because she was black and an “easy target.”
Police say Danilov stabbed the woman four times with a five-inch steak knife, puncturing her lung.
Danilov was arrested at the store. He does not have a previous criminal record.
The victim is expected to make a full recovery.
“It’s insane, it’s crazy,” shopper Mark Soliday told ABC Chicago. “To actually just go out of your way to injure somebody like that out of sheer ugliness, it’s horrific. There’s always crazy people out there, but you can’t stop living. And this is a wonderful establishment.”
“Broad daylight,” said shopper Dorita Crudup. “You’ve got to be aware of daytime and nighttime, don’t you? I’ve been coming to this store for 20-something years, and it’s not going to stop me, but I’m going to be a little bit more aware of my surroundings. That’s all I can do.”
“Unfortunately we have people like that that act out,” added shopper Aldric Hinton. “Thank God she didn’t get killed.”
