Video: NYPD Cop Viciously Beats, Bloodies Man With a Baton – All Because He Didn’t Pay His Train Fare
A bystander captured a disturbing video showing an NYPD officer pepper spraying and beating a young man – all because he didn’t pay his fare.
PIX 11 reports that the man who recorded the video saw the struggle begin after the officer used pepper spray on 20-year-old Donovan Lawson.
After the man is pepper sprayed, the officer is seen on video pushing Lawson against the wall and hitting him with a baton across the legs. Lawson is seen dropping to protect his legs when the officer hits him in the head. At this point, Lawson is bleeding and the officer simply grabs him and shoves him through the turnstiles, hitting him against walls on the way.
Bystanders can be heard yelling, “what are you doing?”
It’s NYPD policy to never strike a suspect in the head with a baton.
The NYPD reports that Lawson has never had any prior arrests. Now, the young man is charged with fare beating, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and disrupting government administration in this case.
Lawson was taken to the hospital following the beating to be treated for cuts and bruises.
In July, the police department announced it would start a “top to bottom” retraining of all officers in use of force after the death of Eric Garner, who died after officers put him in a chokehold after an altercation over him selling illegal cigarettes.
