Texas Woman All Smiles in Mugshot After Setting Fire to Yoga Studio to ‘Get Rid of the Devil’s Temple’
A Texas woman whose mugshot went viral after it showed her beaming with pride explained that she was happy because she burned down a yoga studio to “get rid of the devil’s temple.”
Nancy Duarte, 41, was arrested for setting fire to a yoga studio in Dallas.
Duarte, who goes by Suzanne, told CBS Dallas that she admits to burning down the studio and wants the public to know why she did it.
“Most people can’t understand the smiling mugshot,” Duarte told CBS through glass at a visitation room in the Dallas County Jail. “I thought it was going to make me happy, to burn the place that had brought me so much pain and suffering.”
Duarte says she went to the American Power Yoga studio on Saturday with a baseball bat and gasoline. She says she has been involved in a longstanding dispute with two men associated with the studio.
“He kept hitting on me and kept trying to make me his girlfriend on the side,” Duarte said about one men.
She says both men harassed her for years both inside and outside of the studio.
“Even as I’m walking out the door, he kept trying to put his hands on me, and I was like, ‘No!’” Duarte told CBS.
She says she waited until it was late on Saturday so no one would be in the studio.
“Just to set it on fire,” Duarte said. “Just destroy it, get rid of the devil’s temple.”
Brad Dickinson, who was outside of a nearby business waiting for a comedy show to begin, says firefighters had to evacuate all nearby businesses.
“She was taking matches and lighting them and tossing them,” Dickinson told CBS, adding that Duarte could have caused the entire shopping center to catch fire.
Duarte is being held on $16,000 bond.
