Sandra Bland ‘Swallowed Large Quantity of Marijuana or Smoked It In Jail’: DA
Sandra Bland’s family’s attorney says the woman found dead in a Texas jail cell either smoked or swallowed a large amount of marijuana while in custody.
Attorney Cannon Lambert disclosed a text message sent to him by Waller County District Attorney Elton Mathis, saying, “Looking at the autopsy results and toxicology, it appears she swallowed a large quantity of marijuana or smoked it in jail.”
“This will of course be very relevant in any future criminal or civil litigation,” Mathis added in the text.
“The family’s confidence is shaken by the continued discrepancies that are surfacing,” Lambert told Reuters, adding that the state needs to conduct a second autopsy.
Bland was pulled over on July 10 for failing to signal a lane change. She says she only changed lanes to let the police car behind her pass.
The incident escalated into an altercation and Bland was arrested for assaulting an officer. She was found hanging in her jail cell with a plastic trash bag around her neck three days later.
Her death was ruled a suicide but remains under investigation.
A day after Bland was found dead in a jail cell, 18-year-old Kindra Chapman was founded dead in her jail cell under similarly mysterious circumstances in Alabama.
