Virginia Mom Dresses Child In Ku Klux Klan Halloween Costume
A Virginia mother is defending her decision to dress her child as a Ku Klux Klan member for Halloween. Jessica Black put her 7-year-old son, Jackson, in a Klan robe and said it was a tradition in her family. But unsurprisingly, their community was outraged when the pair went trick-or-treating together.
“It’s supposed to be white with white. Black with black. Man with woman and all of that,” said Jessica to WHSV-TV. “That’s what the KKK stands for. The KKK every year, raises money to donate to the St. Jude’s.” Jackson told the TV station that he thought the costume was “cool” and liked “the hat part” most.
Jessica said she has received angry posts and threats on her Facebook page, but doesn’t see anything wrong with the costume. She also claimed to have made the costume herself, at Jackson’s request, but warned him about the potential dangers of wearing it.
“I told him that if you wear the costume, there’s gonna be people talking about you,” she said. “There’s gonna be people that say bad things to you when you wear it.”
Photos of several racist and controversial Halloween costumes ended up going viral last week, including the white men from Florida who dressed as Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman, and actress Julianne Hough donning blackface for her Orange is the New Black outfit.
The Ku Klux Klan had over four million members during their peak in the early 20th century. However, the group has struggled with unity for over 80 years and now has a scant 6,000 members.
