VIDEO: Arsenio Hall Slams Kanye West’s Misinformed Racism Rants
Arsenio Hall is taking a stand over Kanye West’s ill-informed rants on racism. In recent weeks, the rapper has spoken about being “marginalized” buy white America, released clothing with the Confederate flag and even accused the Grammys of being racist in “only” nominating him for two awards this year. But when West dragged Hall’s name into his discussions, the late-night host made it clear that wasn’t appreciated.
In a recent radio interview, West said that he was similar to Hall because, “we’re born artists; we’re born free; and then we’re held down by society’s perception of us.” The rapper also declared that Hall’s talk show was canceled because he was too opinionated and that they would eventually say, “Oh, he’s like Arsenio Hall, and he was turning up too much and now you fired. But when you got money, can’t nobody fire you.”
Hall fired back and said he chose to walk away from his show, making it clear that race had nothing to do with the removal of his late-night program two decades ago. “As usual, Kanye’s premise confuses the facts. Therefore, everything else has to be thrown out,” he said. “The white man didn’t do nothin’ this time, bruh. Save that for when the white man do do somethin’… Don’t muddy the waters of racism with my bulls*it because it was not racism. It was not a plot. I just left my show… I don’t like to be put in those conversations.”
The talk show host also objected to West’s frequent use of the word “slave” and speaking about the struggle of black men in entertainment. “I came from the ghetto of Cleveland. That was my struggle,” he said. “If you’re in the music business, you shouldn’t f*ck with that word [“slave”]. Too serious an era. Do you know what [that word] meant to slaves?”
