White Man Charged With Hate Crime In Knockout Game Attack On Black Man
Texas native Conrad Alvin Barrett has become just the second person to be charged with a hate crime in relation to knockout games, which involve trying to render an unsuspecting victim unconscious with a single punch. Barrett, 27, attacked a 79-year-old African-American man and recorded the incident himself, stating that “the plan is to see if I were to hit a black person, would this be nationally televised?” Later on the video, Barrett allegedly yelled, “Knockout, baby!” The elderly man lost three teeth in the incident.
“Suspected crimes of this nature will simply not be tolerated,” said Kathleen Madigan, U.S. Attorney for the southern district of Texas. “Evidence of hate crimes will be vigorously investigated and prosecuted with the assistance of all our partners to the fullest extent of the law.” Barrett now faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted. The other person to be charged with a hate crime for a knockout game attack, Amrit Marajh of NYC, reportedly beat up his victim because the man was Jewish.
This man isn’t the only recent elderly victim of a knockout game, though. 76-year-old Yvonne Small earlier this month by an unidentified male in Brooklyn, N.Y., who fled the scene shortly after attacking the woman. She was taken to a local hospital and treated for a head injury before being released. Police are still searching for the suspect.
However, some potential knockout victims have managed to fight back. A viral video from earlier this month showed a man sucker-punching a woman in Las Vegas. She then pulled him to the floor and began beating him with a flurry of punches. Once the woman’s boyfriend realized the teenager tried to hit his girlfriend, he then punches him as well and yelled, “You just hit a girl?!” The end of the video shows the teenager on the ground in the fetal position, writhing in pain.
