Musician Prince Says Black People Don’t Get ‘Second Chances’

Legendary musician Prince has sparked plenty of debate with his recent comments about black entertainers and their place in entertainment. The rocker has been speaking out against racism on music and film for more than three decades and said there is still much work to be done in 2014. Prince argued that black entertainers are forced to put out perfect products every time in order to keep their careers afloat, while white artists are given more leeway to fail.
“Didn’t you know that black people aren’t given a second chance? It’s like Chris Rock said: Leonardo DiCaprio makes one bad movie after another and he just keeps going,” he told British music magazine Mojo. “Chris Rock makes a bad movie and he doesn’t work again. Black people aren’t allowed to make mistakes.”

Of course, some recent instances involving African-American musicians could debunk his claims. Rapper Kanye West has had numerous instances of bad behavior in recent months, but remains one of the world’s most popular performers. Last month, he paid a $250,000 settlement to an 18-year-old that used the N-word towards him and fiance Kim Kardashian. The teenager allegedly called Kardashian a “ni**er lover” inside of a medical clinic and also used the N-word to describe West, after which he went straight to the teenager and assaulted him by punching him in the face. The massage therapist in the room broke up the fight and Beverly Hills police were called to the office.

West is also facing assault charges over attacking a photographer last year at LAX. Los Angeles city prosecutors have charged West with misdemeanor battery, grand theft and vandalism over destroying the camera of a paparazzi member, which took place just days after the MTV Video Music Awards. West faces over two years in prison if convicted on all the charges, but it’s unlikely he will face any jail time.
