Chelsea Handler Denies Being Racist After ’12 Years A Slave’ Tweets

Comedian Chelsea Handler is defending herself against accusations of racism after her controversial stint live tweeting the Oscars. She took a swipe at Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o, who won the Oscar for best supporting actress, tweeting “#AngelinaJolie just filed adoption papers #lupitanyongo #Oscars @chelseahandler.” She also tried to plug her new book in some of the more questionable tweets, writing in one “Congratulations #12yearsaslave Go to Africa or buy #ugandabekiddingme.”

But in an interview today with Good Morning America, Handler denied that she was racist in any way. “People are mad at me all the time. If I was worried about that, then I would be spending a lot of time online. I’d rather be a little bit more productive,” she said. “I’m not racist. I date a lot of black people, so that would be a difficult thing to explain to them.”

Unfortunately, Handler has admitted to making racist remarks in the past. During a January 2013 interview with Howard Stern, she admitted to calling her former boyfriend, rapper 50 Cent, a racist name before breaking up with him. “I think I called him the worst thing you could say to a black person, short of calling him the N-word,” she said. “I said something like you’re a street person basically. Something along the lines of being a gangster. It was really, really offensive and I hung up and I’ve never spoken to him again.”
