Student Slapped With One-Year Suspension For Hugging Teacher
Cries of sexual harassment might be going a bit too far after a high school student was suspended for the rest of the school year for hugging his teacher. Atlanta student Sam McNair won’t be graduating on time after video showed him going into a room and giving a teacher a bear hug, tucking his head into her neck. Although the video shows a relatively harmless act, the teacher wrote the student up after claiming his lips touched her neck and cheek.
McNair denied there was any sexual intent and said he had hugged this teacher on numerous occasions before without any repercussions. “Something so innocent can be perceived as something totally opposite,” he said to WGCL. The high school senior was planning on attending college next year, but that is no longer a possibility.
“He plays football and was getting ready for lacrosse and you’re stripping him of even getting a full scholarship for athletics for college,” said his mother, April. She said there should have been some sort of warning that took place first before moving straight into a one-year suspension.
However, the Gwinnett County Public School district said that Sam was in violation of their harassment policy. They also confirmed that he had been suspended before, but it was never due to sexual harassment. It’s unclear whether Sam will move to another school or simply take the rest of the year off. He had been applying to colleges, but will now need to wait until next year to reapply for those schools.
