Toronto Mayor Rob Ford Keeps Upping The Crazy
Toronto Mayor Rob Ford just can’t seem to keep himself out of trouble. The disgraced politician has been forced to backtrack on statements he made earlier this week which insinuated that a Toronto Star reporter was a pedophile. Daniel Dale vowed to sue Ford over defamation for his comments, so the mayor released his version of an apology this morning during a city council meeting.
During a TV interview last week with former media mogul Conrad Black, Ford said of Dale: “I have little kids. When a guy’s taking pictures of little kids, I don’t want to say the word, but you start thinking, you know, what’s this guy all about?” He defended his comments a day later by saying he “stands by every word” and later repeating them to other news outlet.
Perhaps because of the threat of a lawsuit, Ford had a change of heart and said he “certainly did not intend to suggest that he is a pedophile. I do not believe Mr. Dale is a pedophile.” Ford also blamed media outlets for taking his words out of context and insinuating he was calling Dale a word which never came out of his mouth.
However, the reporter said Ford’s apology was grossly insufficient. “I asked Mayor Ford to 1) retract all of his false claims about my conduct and 2) issue an unreserved, abject, complete apology. His statement today didn’t come close. I’m proceeding with a defamation lawsuit,” tweeted Dale. “I didn’t ask for an ‘I apologize if.’ I asked for an ‘I apologize because I said false, damaging, and unfounded things, and here they are.’ So while I appreciate the mayor’s first step, no dad or teacher would accept that apology as sufficient. I would appreciate another try.”
