Boy Scout Troop Leader: Gay Scouts Should Be Treated Like Criminals
A Boy Scout troop leader in Texas has sparked outrage by declaring that gay scouts should be treated like criminals as an example of “Christian love.” The ban on gay scouts may have been lifted at the beginning of this year, but Marble Falls Troop 284 leader Thom Fairleigh is still having his troop sponsored by the local First Baptist Church and said he will still continue to condemn homosexuality.
“It’s just like if a boy came to me and said he’s a thief,” explained Fairleigh. “In Christian love I would say ‘You’ve got a problem and that we definitely will not approve of it’ and we would send him to get pastoral counseling.”
First Baptist Church of Marble Falls Head Pastor Ross Chandler worked with Fairleigh to create a “resolution” as to what the troop leaders would tell gay scouts. The resolution states that “we believe homosexual activity, not orientation, to be a sin. This will be the moral standard in regard to human sexuality communicated … whenever conversations arise in the natural exchanges between leaders and scouts. It is not a curriculum or a class, simply a guiding morality woven into the fabric of our BSA units.”
Boy Scouts of America Capitol Area Council spokesperson Charles Mead said that Fairleigh’s position was not in line with Boy Scouts policy anymore, stating that any issues or questions regarding sexuality should be “directed back to the family.”
