CEO Tells ‘Daily Show’ That Mentally Retarded Workers Should Earn $2 Per Hour
Most of the content on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart is hysterical, but a CEO recently interviewed on the program made horrifically offensive comments about mentally retarded people. Euro Pacific Capital CEO Peter Schiff spoke to correspondent Samantha Bee about the possibility of Barack Obama raising the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour and said it would have devastating effects on the economy.
However, Schiff raised plenty of eyebrows by suggesting that mentally retarded people should work for $2 per hour. “I believe in the principles this country was founded on,” he said. “I’m not going to say we’re all created equal. You’re worth what you’re worth.”
He argued that it was government programs and not low wages that were destroying the economy and said fast food workers didn’t appear to have issues with their salary. “Did you ever go into a McDonald’s or Burger King?” he said. “I don’t really eat there, but they don’t seem desperate and hungry to me. They’re young kids. They seem to be enjoying themselves mostly.”
Schiff’s comments couldn’t be further from the truth, though. Fast food workers across the country have held numerous strikes to protest what they believe are unfair wages and inadequate working conditions. Some employers have responded to this sharply; last December, The entire staff of a sandwich shop in Chicago were fired via e-mail after going on strike to obtain better wages and working conditions. Doug Besant, the Director of Operations at Snarf’s Sub Shop, sent the Christmas “thanks” just three days before the holiday.
