Pat Robertson: Exposing your Kids to Lesbians May Turn them Gay

During the Dec. 12 broadcast of the 700 Club, televangelist and host Pat Robertson advised a woman to steer her gay friend away from her children and her home because “you don’t want your children to grow up as lesbians.”

During the Bring It On segment of the show, in which viewers write in for spiritual and practice counseling from Robertson, a viewer named Catherine wrote to the show that she had recently reconnected with a friend from high school but discovered after inviting her over, that she was gay.

“I know that my friend’s family has shunned her because of her lifestyle and I don’t want to be like that.  I want to show love,” Catherine wrote adding that she does not want her friend to think that by showing love and acceptance, “I am okay with her ways.”

In response, Robertson told her that “you don’t gain anything by shunning but at the same time, you don’t want your children to grow up as lesbians.”

He further warned that exposing her children to this woman would send the message, “that that’s an acceptable lifestyle for your family.”

He concluded that while Catherine could try to maintain a friendship, she must make it clear that her lesbian lifestyle was not consistent with Christianity. He encouraged her  to tell her gay friend, “Look, I love you and we’re going to do what we can to be friends if we can, but I have my lifestyle, it’s Christian. And you have yours, it’s not.”

According to Greg Hernandez, a writer for Gay Star News, this latest anti-gay ‘advice’ is nothing new for Robertson.   “In the past, Robertson has made many outrageous comments about gay people,” Hernandez said, pointing out that an incidence “earlier this year when he claimed that gay men, in San Francisco, try to purposely spread AIDS by cutting people with a ‘special ring.’”

He also noted  that Robertson has said “that gay people can change their orientation just as murderers, rapists and thieves can change,” thus possibly fueling his concern that exposure to a lesbian may have the potential to turn them gay.
