Three Ways the Right-Wing is Trying to Convince You that Climate Change Doesn’t Exist
Climate change denial is big business, with a recent report finding that the majority of the rhetoric was fueled by millions of dollars of so-called ‘dark money,’ or funders who remain in the shadows while using others to promote their agenda. During the recent cold snap that froze out much of the United States, talk refuting global warming hit a feverish pitch, with the right-wing using the ridiculously cold temperatures blanketing the country to prove climate change is, once and for all, a massive hoax.
From SUVs on Jupiter to conspiracy theories propagated by the liberal media, here are three reasons the right-wing wants you to think climate change is just a liberal mind trick.
The Liberal Media Created the Polar Vortex to Trick Americans into Believing Climate Change
Right-wing radio host Rush Limbaugh this week announced the polar vortex, used by scientists to explain the recent frigid temperatures, is a liberal media scam.
“Do you know what the polar vortex is? Have you ever heard of it?,” Limbaugh demanded. “Well, they just created it for this week…They’re in the middle of a hoax, they’re perpetrating a hoax, but they’re relying on their total dominance of the media to lie to you each and every day about climate change and global warming.”
According to Jennifer Francis, a research professor at Rutgers University, however, the polar vortex is very real. The real story,” Francis explained, is that the jet stream that helps regulate temperatures in North America has gone all wonky and is “taking these big swings north and south and that’s causing unusual weather to occur in a number of places around the Northern Hemisphere.”
Further, as it turns out while these few days of extreme cold in one small section of the earth may seem to indicate the earth is cooling, worldwide record high temperatures have been reported throughout the planet, from Australia to Alaska, canceling out the few days of frigid temps felt in the States.
Climate Change is a Hoax Because Jupiter is Heating Up and It Has No SUVs
Aging televangelist Pat Robertson offered his own interpretation of why global warming was a hoax this week, demanding big money and an attempt at energy grabbing was at the heart of the great climate change conspiracy.
“It’s getting warmer in Jupiter—and they don’t have any SUVs driving around in Jupiter—it has nothing to do with greenhouse gases it has to do with the action of the sun, there’s either too much sun or not enough sun,” Robertson told his 700 Club audience on Jan. 7.
Turns out, Robertson is on to something. According to NASA, climate change is a factor in Jupiter’s rising temperatures. That does not change the fact, however, that humanity’s gas guzzling ways have seriously impacted climate change back here on earth according to the United Nations and leading scientists.
Climate Change is Biggest Theft in History
Echoing Robertson’s cries that the liberals are using climate change to extort resources and cash, Glenn Beck told his viewers that they are “bankrupting us in every way they possibly can.”
He concluded that climate change is a front for the “biggest transfer of wealth in the history of all mankind,” and encouraged his viewers to write down his warnings that this is “the biggest theft ever in the history of the world.”
While this theory of thievery has been banging around the internet for a while, the World Bank has a much different take. The World Bank recently reported that the wealthiest nations, especially the United States, are the one’s causing climate change, while the poor in the developing world are the most likely to suffer.
The true victims of thievery, then, according to the report, are not Americans tricked into climate change, but persons in the world’s poorest countries who cannot afford to drive around in gas guzzling cars or have access to electricity, but are watching their homes and communities destroyed by changing weather patterns year after year.
