Ted Cruz: Bundy Ranch Standoff is Obama’s Fault Because He’s Taken Away Our Liberties

In an interview with Texas radio host Chad Hasty, Sen. Ted Cruz blamed Obama for inciting the Bundy Ranch standoff with his ‘jackboot authoritarian’ regime.

Demanding that the President is ‘hell-bent’ on taking away the liberties of American citizens, Cruz told the radio host that the armed incident between the Bureau of Land Management and militia members was ultimately Obama’s fault because he has pushed people like Cliven Bundy too far.

The Nevada ranch standoff started when rancher Cliven Bundy refused to pay range fees to the government for over 20 years. When the government finally intervened and tried to remove Bundy’s cattle from the federal lands, armed militia members were mustered who threatened a violent conflict with the federal authorities.

Although the federal authorities eventually backed down, the militia members have not, remaining on the ranch and threatening a second revolutionary war against the tyrannical government and sparking a national debate about whether or not the armed resistance was justified or not.

When asked about the matter during Hasty’s show, Cruz said he understood why Bundy and the militia camped out on the ranch were angry and would decide to respond to the government with force.

“The reason this issue is resonating…is that for five years, we have seen our liberty under assault,” Cruz said, pointing fingers at Obama. “We have seen our liberty under assault from a federal government that seems hell-bent on expanding its authority over every aspect of our lives.”

He then said the federal government should be looking after the rights of the American people, not engaging them in armed conflict. “We should have a federal government protecting the liberty of the citizens, not using the jackboot of authoritarianism to come against the citizens,” Cruz stressed, sympathizing with the supporters of Bundy’s cause.  “And I think this is the unfortunate and tragic culmination of the path that President Obama has set the federal government upon.”
