Rick Santorum: ‘A Well Armed Family is a Safe Family’

On Sunday’s Face the Nation, former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum explained why America would be a lot safer, if only we had more people carrying guns.

When asked by host Bob Schieffer during the segment if he believed that a recent Georgia law allowing guns to be taken into airports, schools and other public places was a good idea, Santorum replied, “I said this at the NRA, I think a well-armed family is a safe family.”

He then continued, “I think a well-armed America is a safer America. I think if you look at anything from all of these attacks that have taken place is that if people had actually had weapons there, those attacks would have been thwarted and people’s lives would have been saved.”

He then said all those gun-hating liberals who linked gun ownership to spikes in crime and violence are just plain wrong.

“In fact, there are millions of lives that are saved in American every year — or millions of instances like that where gun owners have prevented crimes and stopped things from happening because of having guns at the scene,” he insisted.

Santorum also suggested having armed civilians in and around America’s airports could actually help stop terrorism.

“I don’t think this is going to encourage some bad guy to cause harm in an airport, but it’s going to create an opportunity that if something bad does happen at an airport, that maybe someone will be there to be able to stop it,” Santorum explained.

He then reiterated how backwards the anti-gun lobby was on the matter. “It’s a wrongheaded approach that somehow or another, that if we take guns away from people – law-abiding people who want to protect themselves – that the world is going to be safer,” he told Schieffer. “In fact, just the opposite.”

Until an 8 year-old gets his or her hands on a semi-automatic rifle; A wife or husband shoots the other because they feared a burglar; the gun goes off while cleaning and kills a kid or other family member; they shoot someone they think is a trespasser and it turns out to be someone simply looking for an address, or worse yet, help. I say this as a man who in my lifetime has heard of these incidents far more often than of someone actually defending themselves. I am 72 and I have owned a variety guns in my life, and I actually believe in the Second Amendment – all of it, not just the last few words.
